2020-2021 Board Applicants

Katelyn Boughton (she/her)

Position: President

About Me:

I joined the Kamloops Pride board this year initially as a Director, however moved into the Vice President position to fill a vacancy. I am a very curious person with an insatiable appetite for learning, with a focus on Science and Technology. I am also a very nerdy person who loves science fiction, movies, board games, video games and reading. I enjoys traveling and to date has been fortunate enough to have visited fourteen different countries.  For the last 20+ years I have been living in Kamloops and also attended university at TRU.

Contributions to the LGBTQ2S+ Community over the last year:

For the last year I have been the Vice President of Kamloops Pride. I worked on numerous projects while on the board including, planning and executing the first Community Summit, planning and executing Pride Week 2020, and did a lot of foundational work with the Governance committee around updating and creating processes and documentation for Kamloops Pride. I also took the time to rebuild the Kamloops Pride webpage, updating its appearance and content. Prior to the lock down brought on by the pandemic, I was also participating in the monthly Espresso Yourself events, and attended a new Beers for Queers. In addition to my work with Kamloops Pride, I am also a member of my companies Pride committee, where we plan and hold numerous events throughout the year to provide education and support for members of the LGBTQ2S+ community within the organization.

Why do you want to join the Kamloops Pride board?

As I suspect the pandemic will continue at least until late 2021 if not longer, I want to stay on the board to help continue to enhance and build the foundation of Kamloops Pride. Without a normal Pride parade, and due to the fiscal impact of the pandemic, Kamloops Pride had very little in terms of donations this year. The current board had to be careful of expenses to ensure that Kamloops Pride continued to have financial resources. I want to help look for new sources of funds, whether that be grants or others.  I also want to guide the new board into looking at different ways we can engage with the community in a safe way. I will admit that this years Pride week event attendance was pretty small, so I am hope we can do better next year given the situation we are all facing.

Kristen Luttmerding (she/her)

Position: Vice President

About Me:

My name is Kristen and I'm originally from Armstrong, which is on the unceded territory of the Syilx/ Okanagan Nation. I completed my Bachelor of Social Work last year at Thompson Rivers University, wherein I focused on allyship as ethical social work practice. In the future I will be pursuing graduate studies in social work, with the goal of becoming a mental health counsellor. The past year, I was lucky to be on the Kamloops Pride board as a general director, as well as the Volunteer Coordinator, although COVID unfortunately decreased opportunities to utilize our wonderful volunteers. I feel like a lot of great work was accomplished by the Board this year, and I would be honored to continue working for another term. In my spare time, I like to be outside (hiking and camping) with my dog as much as possible. I also enjoy creating art and watching trashy reality television.

Contributions to the LGBTQ2S+ Community over the last year:

The past year I was a general board member for Kamloops Pride. The most notable project I worked on was as a member of the Finance/ Governance committee. We revamped the Kamloops Pride Consitution, as well as created a succession plan to set up future Boards for success and easy integration. I also recently typed up a new matrix for the board to run new partners through (with much help from my fellow board members and Vancouver Pride's existing model). I signed up to be the Volunteer Coordinator shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, so unfortunately I wasn't able to coordinate volunteers for events, but I look forward to doing so in the future if this role is available again.

Why do you want to join the Kamloops Pride board?

My experience on the Board last year was very enjoyable and meaningful to me. I feel as though I learned a lot last year, and I feel more equipped to take on bigger responsibilities in a second term. I am also excited about the opportunity to get creative with new events and projects that will be possible in the socially distanced world we now find ourselves in.

Contributions to the LGBTQ2S+ Community over the last year:

Jason Richard (he/him)

Position: Treasurer

About Me:

I have lived in Kamloops for most of my life, and my husband and I plan to continue to call it home. For the past 9 years, I have been teaching at the elementary level. As a teacher, I'm dedicated, organized, and flexible. I'm a huge fan of all things games--board games, video games, role-playing games, etc. I also love singing, and am a member of Pride Choir.

Contributions to the LGBTQ2S+ Community over the last year:

Over the last year, I was the secretary for the Kamloops Pride Board. In addition to that positions roles, I was also part of both the Governance and Events Committees. In addition, for the past 4 years, I have been part of the school district's SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) team. I have been working at a school-level to raise SOGI awareness, support my fellow teachers and students, and help develop opportunities that allow all students to feel represented, acknowledged, and supported regardless of their own identity.

Why do you want to join the Kamloops Pride board?

I first joined the Kamloops Pride Board last year because I wanted to be more involved in my community. I wanted to raise up that same community and continue the good work of the past boards. I was able to start doing that in my first year on the board, but I feel like I need more time to truly accomplish those goals. As both Katelyn and Kristin have mentioned, the Governance Committee began large undertakings this year, but we need more time to put them into full operation.

Kaylie D. Walsh (she/her/hers/they/them)

Position: General Board

About Me:

My name is Kaylie Walsh. As of October 6th 2020 I will be 26 years of age. I am currently employed as a Full time Program Coordinator for Interior Community Services and hold a Bachelor of Social Work Degree, a Human Services Diploma, an Education and Community Assistant Certificate and a TRU Aboriginal Start Program Certificate. If we're getting a little "personal" in this section, I love to play video games, go for small hikes and I love reading when I find the time! Please feel free to ask me any further questions if this didn't prove to be sufficient in defining who I am.

Contributions to the LGBTQ2S+ Community over the last year:

In my current and past positions, I have supported LGBTQ2S+ individuals in finding resources within the Kamloops and Merritt area. Truthfully, I haven't made many contributions this particular year, how ever, in previous years I have supported individuals with exceptionalities (Special Needs [sic]) who have identified as LGBTQ2S+ , as well as I helped facilitate in an LGBTQ2S+ booth to promote acceptance at Thompson Rivers University.

Why do you want to join the Kamloops Pride board?

I have always wanted to help the LGBTQ2S+ community as an ally and possible individual who is questioning. When I say "help", I mean to advocate for, and to speak up for those who are made to feel ashamed of who they are, or for those who need a voice or someone to stand by. I also want to join as I hope that even the smallest bit that I can do, would make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Tory LeBeau (she/her)

Position: General Board

About Me:

My name is Tory LeBeau and I am a proud working Ally in the LGBTQ2S+ Community. I recently graduated from Thompson Rivers University in 2020 with my Bachelor of Social Work. I am originally from the North Shuswap (Lee Creek) but have now moved to Kamloops since graduating. I have started my career working in the Kamloops community at Seasons Health Therapies working with Survivors of Violence and/or Abuse. I consider myself a working Ally as I am always learning and listening as an active individual within the community. My passion in different areas has led me to want to be part of the community and get involved as much as I can.

Contributions to the LGBTQ2S+ Community over the last year:

I have been able to incorporate educational resources and workshops into my current job working with survivors of violence and/or abuse. I want to become more involved in Kamloops and become a stronger Ally in my work going forward.

Why do you want to join the Kamloops Pride board?

I want to be part of Kamloops Pride Board to become a stronger member of the community and to become an even stronger working Ally. The LGBTQ2s+ community was something I never knew or was spoken to about as a child, growing up in a small community it was not until middle school when I started meeting new individuals, learning and asking questions I began understanding more. I know how important just starting a conversation and educating individuals can be, as it brought me into the field of social work. I want to make changes and start conversations within and outside the LGBTQ2S+ community and being part of the Kamloops Pride Board from an ally ship viewpoint.

Kristen Jacobsen (she/her)

Position: General Board

About Me:

I am 24 years old, and am currently a TRU student. I have completed a Psychology degree, and am now working on a Tourism Management degree in Festivals and Events. Events are my passion, and I was the Chair of the TRU Philosophy, History and Politics (PHP) Conference. Including my year as Chair, I have been a member of the Conference Committee for 4 years, contributing in Promotions, Fundraising and Events, and Treasurer through the years. I have developed a Human Resource Plan for the committee, recruited a whole new team, managed the committee's website, and in total have helped raise over $30,000 for the group.

Contributions to the LGBTQ2S+ Community over the last year:

Unfortunately I have not had a chance to volunteer due to COVID keeping everyone inside. If I take away the limit of 1 year, I can include participation in Pride Parades, attendance at Kamloops Pride fundraisers, and being a member of the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) at my school to raise awareness. As part of the GSA, my biggest contribution has been holding events for the committee to raise funds and awareness to be able to expand the committee's reach. I am really looking forward to being a part of the Kamloops Pride group and being able to contribute everything that I can.

Why do you want to join the Kamloops Pride board?

In short, I want to join because I care. I am really hoping to learn from everyone else on the Board, while at the same time contributing in my own way. Kamloops Pride is so important to raise awareness and support everyone in this community who may need it. I feel that I have a lot to offer already in the area of organizing events, but I am definitely hoping to learn a lot more about the other areas of the committee. I myself am bisexual, but am often passed off as straight as I am in a long-term relationship with a man.
